Ethnobotany of the South American lowlands in Jesuit missionary writings
In the article, we focus on the specificity of perceptions of the South American lowland flora as reflected in the writings of Jesuit missionaries. In addition, we explore these texts as a source on the ethnobotany of the wider region as well. We analyse in greater detail two 18th century texts, titled 'There and Here' by Florian Paucke and ' The Open Treasure of the Great Amazon River' by Joao Daniel. While the memoirs of Paucke represent an interested observer's essays, Daniel's treatise is a project to develop the Amazon natural resources. The two texts have similar structure and classification scheme based on the uses of plants by the local indigenous people. We believe that the works of Paucke and Daniel are still of importance for the history of natural sciences and ethnobotany.
