Soviet photo stand-ins as reflected in the travel journal of a young Tyumen resident
The article draws on the travel journal of a young resident of the city of Tyumen who represents the part of the young generation that, without any apparent contradictions, adopted ideological models of their time marked by the popularity of the ideas of the Cultural Revolution. The travel journal contains his memories of some events, such as a journey abroad and his participation in the expedition to the Soviet North. The conceptual focus of the research is on photo stand-ins (tintamarresques) that, through the images of a specific ego-document, are analysed and presented as a metaphor for the mechanism of not being a victim in the totalitarian state. The authors suggest that the young people's conflict-free entry into the new system of social relations took place with reliance on the values and attitudes which are inherent in traditional society and which constituted the basis for the new Soviet tin-tamarresque.
