The living dead: guardians of the gardens, advisors, and patrons of the modern Haya of Tanzania

The article presents analysis of how the Haya from North-Western Tanzania see the cult of ancestors and funeral rites today. It shows that Christianisation / Islamisation, territorial remoteness from native places, and the transformations taking place in modern Tanzania, associated with globalisation - all contribute to change in the traditional norms of the Haya, including the funeral complex.
