The railway across the tundra: Yamal reindeer herders and infrastructure
The construction of the Obskaia - Bovanenkovo railway, designed to transport goods and people to one of the largest gas fields in Russia, was completed on the Yamal Peninsula in 2011. The presence of the road in the territories used by Yamal reindeer herders has led to the exclusion of a significant part of their pastures. However, in the recent years, for the local indigenous population the railway has become not only an integral part of the landscape, but also a new driver of mobility. The tundra people living near the railroad are actively using the new infrastructure, enjoying free transport (e.g., to stock up on food in urban wholesale centres, etc.). Railway stations have become points of gravity for nomads, and the railroad has expanded the boundaries of traditional gender mobility, allowing women to move independently of men at almost any time of year. In addition, the least 'mobile' age groups - old people and children - also got new opportunities. At the same time, the industrial infrastructure has resulted in various manifestations of socio-spatial inequality.
