The Iul'tinskaia road: Infrastructure development project in the life of Chukotka's native villages
The article describes one of the largest infrastructure development projects in Chukotka - the Iul'tinskaia highway. Positioning the road used by the local people as a 'transport artery' and a resource for acquiring material objects, the authors analyse the impact the road has had on the people's mobility practices and perceptions of space. The focus here is native residents' practices of using the highway to perform their everyday tasks and changes in the local people's and material objects' mobility, which led to the establishment of a food and goods supply system and facilitated transformation of how resources are distributed between villages in the Iul'tinskii area. The authors argue that these systemic changes were possible due to the integration of the highway and a series of other infrastructural projects of the state, ranging from the Northern Sea Route and the reindeer slaughterhouse to power lines and trading centres located along the highway. The fact that the road is closely linked to other material objects turns it into an unfinished project dependent on the actions of numerous actors. Despite this, the infrastructural incompleteness of the road, offset by other projects, contributes to its creative use by the local people.
