The cinema book. On current issues and the future of visual anthropology. Interview
Visual anthropology and anthropological cinema are becoming increasingly popular not only in both the academy and the documentary film industry, but also among documentary audiences and organizers of various non-fiction film festivals. Visual anthropology has quite a short but extremely rich history. Throughout its existence, the discipline had to deal with different issues and was faced with many difficult challenges. In the modern world with its pluralistic and globalized society, there is ever less space for traditional culture and traditional ethnic communities. For contemporary visual anthropology and its practitioners, this is a new challenge, namely how to preserve original cultures, their traditions, language, and history, and how to find a place for them in a complex fast-changing world. All these and many other issues in visual anthropology are discussed in this interview.
