Quasi-formal interaction in an educational setting
The article examines a zoologist's scientific practices observed at an educational event dedicated to Science and Technology Studies (STS). In the process of ethnographic observation of the practices, the object of study was found to be changing, since the zoologist saw her aim at the event as pedagogical. The ambiguity of the situation is illustrated by means of analysis of a transcript of a fragment of conversation held during the interaction. This ambiguity consists in the situation revealing some characteristic features of both formal and non-formal types of interaction. The analysis of underlying organizational structures of the interaction allows suggesting that this interaction is quasi-formal because its order is not prescrip-tive-it only limits what is possible in the given situation. Also discussed are the philosophical implications of changing the theoretical frame of analysis undertaken by the author with the aim of better grasping the empirical material at hand.
