Biopolitical aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic: public discussion about freedom and transformation of social life
The article is devoted to the global humanitarian discussion about the biopolitical aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This discussion unfolded in 2020 and continues in 2021 within the scientific community as well as in the popular media, in the blogosphere and on the online platforms. The social challenges of the pandemic, the transformation of the everyday life and the freedom restrictions resulted from the epidemic managing were placed into the center of the discussion. The author offers an overview of the ideas expressed by famous intellectuals including anthropologists, sociologists and philosophers and also highlights several main lines of the described discussion closely related to the concept of the biopower conceived by M. Foucault. The storyline of the generalized controversy is the response to the radical criticism of disciplinary measures by G. Agamben. At the same time expert replies are embedded in the media context and the pandemic reality is directly linked to a wider range of pressing social issues intensively discussed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
