Applying an international approach for Social Impact Assessment to an ethnological expert review of Western Taymyr Peninsula

The article's aim is twofold: on one hand, to present the authors' experience of applying an approach, proposed by international practitioners in the field of Social Impact Assessment, in a kind of applied research specific to Russia, namely the Ethnological Expert Review; on the other, to present a theoretical argument, supported by this experience, against “groupism” in applied research as a trend fraught with certain epistemological and ethical difficulties. The article presents the circumstances, goals, and principles of the Ethnological Expert Review in which the authors participated; describes the approach used in the research process and the reasoning behind choosing it; the course of the study and its results; and the conceptual implication of the authors' experience in the light of anthropological theory.
