Household microinfrastructure in Chukotka: yarangas, containers and greenhouses
The article presents the results of a six-month fieldwork in the Iul'tinskii raion of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug in 2017-2019. The focus is the infrastructure used by local people, as well as the practices of adapting it to perform everyday tasks. The authors consider the yarangas, containers and greenhouses used in the village of Amguema as “embedded” and easily replaceable modules that quickly expand the capabilities of local people in the context of their economic activities. Such material objects play the role of “infrastructure plug-ins” which function in tandem with “major programs” - large infrastructural projects being implemented in Chukotka. Yarangas, containers and greenhouses, which are consistent with the principles of multitasking and multifunctionality of things, help local people maintain their relative autonomy, enabling them to produce and accumulate resources necessary to support livelihoods of local households.
