The Metis and Metis Identity in the works of Quebec historians N.-M. Dawson and R.-A. Bouchard: ways of approaching the problem
Between Quebec historians and anthropologists concerning vernaculari-ty or late arrival to Quebec of natives groups (Montagnais) can be considered logical continuation of a long-term discussion them a position of rather recently declared Metis of Sagenay and Seigneur Mingan. Here will illegally tell about opposition of representatives of one and other scientific directions as it was in a case about Monta-gnais. Anthropologists in general recognize both existence of metis ethnic groups, and their territorial rights ("the right of ancestors"). However opinions of historians R.-A. Bouchard and N.-M. Dawson which were solidary in a question about the Natives Americans were cardinally divided now. Dawson proves what in this region of communities of Metis hasn't developed, and Bouchard not only recognizes a Metis of Saguenay and Seigneur Mingan, but also itself, having identity оf metis, is one of leaders of their national movement. Based on the analysis of the works of these authors, the article will attempt to assess their opinions on this issue.
