Ural Old Believers in Soviet Film Footage
Since the widespread use of photography and the invention of cinema, a huge number of visual sources about the Old Believers have been accumulated, scattered among state, and most of all, family archives. The array of visual sources about the Old Believers continues to grow, and a “visual turn” is clearly brewing in its source study. In the article, using the example of the Soviet documentary film about the Old Believers-chapelites “On the Merry Mountains” from the funds of the Russian State Film and Photo Archive, the possibilities of using such sources in historical research are analyzed. The author declares no conflict of interests.
