The Return of Buddhism: Religion and Politics in Contemporary Kalmykia
This article is devoted to the return of Buddhism to Kalmykia - how, after perestroika and liberalization in Russia, public confessional practices and politics of identity and religiosity were onoe again allowed in the region, where all but one Buddhist temple have been destroyed since the 1930s. The Buddhist faith was restored in the Kalmyk society thanks to the efforts of people who wanted the sangha in Kalmykia to develop independently of the state, overcoming the Soviet experience of making compromises with the government. The author shows how religion-building takes place in contemporary Kalmykia, how Buddhist practices gradually enter the public life of the republic, as well as the close connection of confessional Buddhist affiliation with the ethnic identification of Kalmyks, which was not so obvious during the Soviet rule. The article is written on the basis of field materials collected by the author in Kalmykia in 2018-2021.
