Landscape Approach in Ethnological and Geographic Studies of Reindeer Herding: An Attempt of New Synthesis. An Introduction to the Special Topic of this Issue

The introductory contribution analyzes how the notion of landscape has been understood and used in western and Russian anthropology and geography. This analysis is performed first on the general level and then specifically in application to reindeer herding studies. Particular attention is paid to the duality of the landscape concept, which can refer to a territory with particular borders as well as to those aspects of this territory that are perceived by people. The notion of landscape holism is discussed. The views on landscape that are common for different scientific schools are identified. Particular attention was paid to those aspects that are common for researchers using radically different, sometimes even opposed methodological approaches. The value of the concept of landscape as well as of the landscape approach as it has developed in the Russian cultural geography for anthropological research is revealed. Successive stages of an anthropological research of cultural landscapes, including reindeer herding landscapes, are charted.
