Egor Purtov and His Expeditions Along the Coast of Southeastern Alaska (1787–1797)

Egor Purtov played an important role in the early history of Russian America. It was his expeditions, made in 1793-1794, that opened the way for Russian fur-hunters to the country of the Tlingit Indians. However, information about his biography is rather scarce. This article attempts to trace the milestones of his life in as much detail as possible based on the available published and archival data. As a result, it was established that Egor Purtov was an Irkutsk citizen by origin, arrived in the American colonies in 1787, and participated in a number of hunting and research expeditions in 1787-1797. Of greatest importance were his voyages of 1793 and 1794 along the southeastern coast of Alaska, which allowed the Russian pioneers to penetrate the lands inhabited by the Tlingit Indians. During the expedition of 1794, Purtov was in constant contact with the ships of the British expedition, which circumnavigated the world under the command of George Vancouver. Comparison of Russian and English reports makes it possible to clarify the course and dating of events. The author declares no conflict of interests.
