Retelling as a Tool in the Arsenal of the Singer: Hero as a Passport, Hero as a Sponsor in the Epic of Hair-cutting (Yattuka, Philippines)
The article aims to raise the issue of defining genre features of a metatext in folk tradition. Retellings and commentaries of epic tales are integral parts of life of epic in traditional culture. They have previously attracted the attention of researchers, but there have been no attempts to regard retellings in different traditions as phenomena of the same order. The author gives a brief overview of conclusions made by fellow epic scholars studying epic lore of Siberia and New Guinea, and presents her own field materials on the topic, collected during 30 years of field work with storytellers in the mountain regions of the Philippines. The narrative centers on the short synopsis of the hudhud ni kolot, an epic tale of hair cutting, told by a young narrator, at that time a member of the choir, who soon became a soloist. The tale is performed during a rite of passage - the initiation of a boy into a high rank. This publication is the first presentation of the plot of that unknown epic genre. The author's archive contains 7 audio recordings of this tale, made from 1995 to 2025 in three municipalities of the Ifugao province, performed in the Yattuka and Tuwali Ifugao languages, and a number of interviews with storytellers regarding the relationship between the sung poetic text and its retelling. The very first results of the comparison of such heterogeneous materials, from the author’s point of view, provide grounds for interpreting retelling as a certain phenomenon, a separate genre, which has its own structural, plot and lexical features, since it performs tasks that are different from the performance of the epic itself in its canonical form. To understand that phenomenon, a comparative typological approach is important, which allows us not to be limited to the boundaries of individual traditions, be it the folklore of Siberia or the South Seas, but to trace general patterns of the genre.
