Foreign language instruction in tolerance development in medical higher school students

Sustainable development of the Russian Federation is possible only through strengthening the social sphere, which necessitates the preservation of national identity, education aiming at global constructive cultural values, and instilling a moral compass in the younger generation. Tolerance is an imperishable value common to humanity, which plays an integral role in securing human rights and freedoms, promoting social integration and constructive intercultural dialogue, and reaching parity in interpersonal interaction. Thus, tolerance development in students is an urgent pedagogical task. The aim of the article is to clarify the potential of professionally oriented foreign language training in tolerance development in students of the higher medical school. The authors clarify the content of the concept of "professional tolerance of a doctor" and claim it to be a professionally significant quality of personality and one of the key competences in the framework of ethical, deontological, and communicative competencies. Professional tolerance of a doctor ensures the mental integrity of a specialist in the context of a stressogenic professional environment. It harmonizes person-to-person interaction with due consideration of heterogenic social, cultural, and personal variables. The article considers the methodological basis of foreign language instruction that correlates with the development of socially and professionally significant personality qualities of students. As an academic discipline, language is unique in its universality, since it expresses and conveys all phenomena of reality, shapes our understanding of the world and vise versa. It allows a lecturer to adjust the content of the discipline in accordance with the educational objectives and qualification requirements for graduates. The combination of cultural, person-centered, context, and activity approaches secures the positive learning environment and instructional settings. In the medical university, the foreign language syllabus implies the integration of basic and clinical disciplines content, which exerts the positive effect on students' motivation and involvement in educational activities. This, in turn, serves well in ensuring the unity of professional training and education when applying the appropriate methods. The authors provide the hands-on examples from the methodological set of educational activities used in the development of a tolerance of a doctor via professionally oriented foreign language instruction at Kazan State Medical University.
