The Teacher's Role in Implementing Value-Based Education in India
In the era of globalization and industrialization, a distortion of spiritual and moral values in Indian society is observed. These processes have made people financially rich but morally poor. Thus, the issue of the formation and development of values is rather relevant nowadays. One of the most important roles in value formation in India belongs to teachers. Teachers who practice values in their own lives are able to be role models for their students. As educationalists confirm, the aspect of value-based education has to be included into pre-service and in-service education programmes. It should be noted that the system of pre-service and in-service education was under reform for a long time because some efforts were made to renew and adapt programmes which would meet the requirements of a certain region of the country. In the article, some pre-service and in-service value-based education programmes are considered. Value-based education is the subject of numerous discussions in educational institutions in India. According to Indian scholars, the goal of education is not only to obtain academic knowledge, but also to form values that are necessary to achieve goals students set for themselves. As for teachers, modern Indian society needs competent, dedicated, and skilled professionals who are able to meet the society's needs. Today, the teacher's role is that of a friend, philosopher, and guide, and the teacher's main responsibility is to form the highest values in the younger generation: to set children to the right path not by imposing, but by observing, advising. Unfortunately, value formation is hampered by the lack of students' motivation and desire to change something in their lives, so they remain indifferent to various innovations. On the other hand, not all the teachers are role models for their students as they do not have an internal striving or external support for self-development. That is why there is a need to create pre-service and in-service courses which will increase the level of teachers' personal and professional growth in the field of value-based education. The government provides the policy and legal framework for teachers, and state authorities implement educational programmes and schemes. At the state level, the State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) is in charge of in-service training and specialized courses for teachers. At the regional level, this responsibility lies on the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET).
