Identification strategies of modern French cinema: Tolerance, psychology, taste

The article is devoted to the study of identification strategies of modern French cinema. The author explores the ways and the stages of formation of French national and cultural identity, relates these stages to the paradigmatic development of European culture and philosophy, examines the specifics of the reflection of each of them in the Cinema. The article is focused on the modern paradigm of Culture. The author identifies three aspects of identification strategies that are highlighted in French modern Cinema: tolerance, psychology, taste. The transformation of the French national and cultural identity is traced in the context of the most significant social and cultural changes, and French cinema has become and continues to be a reflection of it. France as a centralized State was created in the ideology of "golden power" or luxury, in the broadest sense of the word of good taste. National identity developed under the sign of luxury, individuation, high taste. This trend can be traced to the first half of XXth century. Researchers note that at this time the French State supported the policy of unification, the creation of a common nation, a unified Culture that is based on common values. This stage in the development of national and cultural identity corresponds to the beginning of the development of cinematography in general and of French in particular. French cinema of this period is distinguished by experiments in the field of image creation, experiments with the film language. It was a time of avant-garde and surrealism in the cinema. These researches in the field of new art fit into the aesthetic concept of exclusivity, author's view, artistic experiment. The next stage can be provisionally dated 1968 - the year of student riots and radical changes in both society and public consciousness. It is the time of existentialism as a paradigm of Culture. In the policy of cultural identity, the emphasis shifts on originality, the right to difference, feeling and inner freedom. French cinema has become more diverse and evolved in the search for new forms and plots. The psychological approach appears as a dominant accent. At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the theme of national and cultural identity for the French has again become important. The third stage of the rethinking of the national identity is connected with the discussion about the failure of multiculturalism. There is the new paradigm of Culture which can be named The Difference appeared. The article investigates the processes taking place at the actual period. The author identifies three main areas of identity reflection in the Cinema. The first direction is multiculturalism and tolerance. The second is the psychological approach, which was developed earlier. The third is to follow the good taste and the "spirit of luxury" inherent in French culture.
