Inclusion in museums: clarification of the notion
The authors analyzed Russian and European approaches to understanding inclusion in museums, its content and practical application in the paper. Most researchers focus on removing barriers to equal access and participation in museum programs for all people, creating an accessible, barrier-free environment, and the realization of the rights for all visitors. They take into account the differences in perceptions and interpretations, which should be viewed as a value distinction rather than a reason for exclusion. Contemporary European scholars’ understanding of inclusion has shifted from social exclusion overcoming and realizing equal rights to recognizing the value of diversity and interpretations and countering racism and nationalism. To solve these problems it is suggested to reorganize an increase of museum staff, but clear mechanisms of these processes are lacking. A participatory approach is recognized as a key factor of inclusion in museums. In Russia, the study of inclusion in museums has started significantly later than abroad and is primarily applied and medically oriented. The feature of Russian researches is its focus on access for visitors with disabilities, while in the European academic tradition, the concepts of diversity and social justice are key. It has been revealed that despite the research of inclusion, a clear understanding of inclusion in museums has not formulated. Similarly, there is no clear understanding of the role of targeted segregation programs in museums. While some authors criticize them, excluding from the context of inclusion, others authors considers them as an initial step towards inclusion. The purpose of the paper is to study various approaches to understanding the phenomenon of inclusion in museums to clarify the concept and its application in various aspects of museum practice. As a result, it is said that the inclusion in museums is a process of exclusion overcoming, providing with equal rights to participate in museum programs, taking into account the unique perceptions of each visitor by overcoming various barriers (physical and information accessibility, and others).
