Designing the transmedia model for a publishing project. The case of republishing the creative legacy of pre-revolutionary Siberian writers

This article delineates the adaptation of the complex modeling method applied to periodicals for the preparation and publication of a project aimed at republishing the creative legacy of pre-revolutionary Siberian writers. The project encompasses the creation of a printed book, an electronic resource (featuring expanded functionalities for engaging with Siberian writers' heritage and scholarly materials), and a multimedia longread available in desktop and mobile versions. Additionally, it involves the establishment and management of social media accounts, accompanied by a series of publications. Development of the design model and interaction elements across various media platforms entailed an extensive analysis, encompassing both typologically akin products and original materials dating back over a century. The objective was to identify elements reflective of the pre-revolutionary era of Siberian writers while maintaining contemporary readability. Furthermore, crafting the transmedia product model involved devising a comprehensive mechanism governing the functional interaction among its components, as depicted in the corresponding schematic representation. The dynamic transformations within the periodicals market have significantly constrained the conventional application of complex press modeling. Conversely, the book market exhibits optimistic recovery dynamics following the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic. Evolving technologies and shifts in media trends permit the transformation of publishing projects into intricate transmedia entities, facilitating heightened reader engagement. The conceptualization of such products necessitates the employment of a systematic approach, aligning verbal and visual elements to meet the diverse requirements of various media platforms while offering tools for efficient work distribution. The Tomsk State University Faculty of Journalism has a well-established tradition in the preparation and publication of book products, with the primary framework of this process adopting a complex modeling approach. This method is continually refined to accommodate the nuances of contemporary media design. Modern book projects transcend the traditional notion of books, evolving into multifaceted media products encompassing websites, social media accounts, offline events, and other platforms. Each platform possesses typological distinctions, influenced by variations in audience demographics, communication formats, and content preferences (text, images, video, etc.). Furthermore, content-related specifics, such as communication style, volume, and frequency, are variable. Design considerations, including typographic nuances, color schemes, and illustrations, also differ across platforms. Human-computer interaction assumes a pivotal role in digital platforms. The unification of these characteristics across print and digital platforms gives rise to the model of a transmedia product - a contemporary publishing format. The author declares no conflicts of interests.
