Development of Competencies Required from Student Journalists: The Humanities
The article discusses the current issues of teaching several disciplines that provide humanitarian and general professional training for journalists. The authors propose approaches based on the use of various data visualization methods in the educational process, in particular, digital presentation tools. They also analyze in detail the project work on creating a timeline as a new format intended for knowledge systematization. This format is successfully used in courses on the history of foreign journalism and the history of Western civilizations. It helps students not only summarize and organize a vast amount of information, but also learn how to put into practice the knowledge of content visualization techniques. Moreover, the authors share the experience of introduction of new approaches into the education process such as teamwork on the design of covers for digital magazines, which reflect the agenda and cultural features of the studied period (the History of Western Civilizations course), digital readers' journal and so on. These approaches are aimed to develop historical thinking, increase erudition in the field of cultural history and improve an aesthetic taste. They make it possible not only to study varied historical aspects from different angles (from personalities to particular fragments of everyday history), but also to deepen the understanding of such topics as the concept of a periodical publication, the agenda and the design of a periodical. Furthermore, bachelors have an additional opportunity to practice their skills in Photoshop and CorelDraw. The article describes interactive teaching strategies applied in the course of Russian literature, which are based on the development of communication skills and work in editorial boards, and other approaches, including interviews and press conferences; multimedia applications intended for generalization and presentation of materials that are created by students for their team projects. Working with literary texts, students also practice their knowledge of the theory of journalism: to complete a number of tasks, students should demonstrate their understanding of the main features of journalistic genres, distinguish journalistic writing and literary style and reinforce the skills of creative writing. The authors use all approaches, strategies and technologies described in the article in teaching at Novosibirsk State University. The authors believe that innovative technologies, on the one hand, enable to make the learning process more productive and, on the other hand, allow successful developing of the "4C competencies" (critical thinking, creativity, communication and cooperation skills).
