Development of Media Competencies among Journalism Students: A Flipped Classroom and Other Educational Technologies

The article presents a variant of the implementation of a competency-based approach in educational using innovative teaching technologies, which the author tested in Altai State University (Barnaul, Russia) in the 2019/2020 academic year. The aim of the article is to disseminate experience in the development and implementation of innovative teaching methods for students majoring in journalism among university professors. The latest research works and reports on the pedagogical innovations show the necessity of using new methods and approaches to education. The essence of the pedagogical innovation the author proposes is an integrated use of innovative technologies in classes on the history of foreign journalism. Such technologies are: a flipped classroom, historical design, gamification of classroom activities, probabilistic multimedia project activities. The "synergy effect" is achieved by the combination of different techniques, their adaptation, filling with topical content. The purpose of the pedagogical experiment is to develop hard skills and to create conditions for developing soft skills (such as creativeness, mental flexibility, teamwork skills, etc). The search for optimal organizational models of the educational process led to the flipped classroom technique, widely discussed in modern foreign pedagogics. This technique is a type of combined learning: new theoretical materials are mastered through online lectures, and self-study is done in the classroom with the professor. An efficiently organized flipped classroom should have two key elements: (1) students' high motivation to study theoretical materials themselves; (2) elaboration of the creative and probabilistic project-oriented cases for working in the classroom. The formation of professional competencies in journalism students is a hard and time-consuming process. First results show students' high motivation to learn. Students demonstrate interest in the flipped classroom format. However, it will be possible to assess the level of assimilation of knowledge only during the summer examination period.
