The article examines the theoretical aspects of the typology of children’s and youth periodicals, and various approaches to determining their types. It emphasizes the importance of considering the purpose of the publication, the concept and the target audience when analyzing typological features. The study aims to comprehensively analyze and identify the key characteristics that determine the structure and content of children’s and youth publications. This will help improve the quality and effectiveness of children’s publications, contributing to their further development and dissemination. The magazines ABVGD - Skazki, Igry, Uroki, Klepa, Klassnyy Zhurnal, Veselye Ideyki, Kollektsiya Idey, Shishkin Les, Nash Filippok, Chudesa i Priklyucheniya were used as an empirical base. Four issues of each magazine for 2024 were considered for analysis. In the course of the study, the research methods of description, systematization and survey were applied. Thus, at the first stage of the study, the available research on the typology of children’s publications was systematized. Further, different approaches to the classification of children’s periodicals were described and examined using specific examples from domestic media practice. At the last stage of the study, a survey was conducted. Thus, popular children’s publications were identified and the reasons for the decrease in interest in reading children’s and youth publications among schoolchildren were considered. The authors conclude that the success of a publication depends on the degree to which its content meets the interests and needs of children. The use of diverse genres and the active use of illustrations helps to keep the attention of young readers, and the study of the typology of the children’s press and its impact on age targeting play a key role in developing effective strategies to attract and retain an audience. Based on the survey conducted among high school students in Rostov Oblast, the following conclusions can be drawn: a low level of interest in children's magazines, popularity of other types of magazines, difficulties with accessibility, lack of content attractiveness, and the predominance of digital sources of information. The author declares no conflicts of interests.
