Mirror labyrinths: towards a methodology for urban exploration
The study of the city as a complex, multi-layered phenomenon requires an interdisciplinary approach that takes into account the various modes of its existence: spatial, social, discursive and virtual. Discursive urbanism suggests considering a city as a system of overlapping discourses created by its inhabitants, political and cultural actors. However, the existing methodology needs to be clarified: it is important not only to determine which aspects of the urban environment are amenable to discursive analysis, but also to develop tools for their study, allowing them to link the discursive, social and physical dimensions of the city. The example of the revitalization of protected areas in Nizhny Novgorod shows that discursive changes can precede social and spatial transformations, forming a new urban identity. This confirms the importance of discourse analysis in urban studies, but also points to the need for further development of a transstructural method capable of integrating various approaches to the study of the urban environment.
