Streamer breakdown with runaway electrons, forming diffuse discharges in an inhomogeneous electric field

The results of experimental studies of the formation of diffuse nanosecond discharges in an inhomogeneous electric field in air and other gases at pressures of 12.5-400 kPa are presented. The studies were conducted using a four-channel ICCD camera, an ultrafast streak camera, and high-speed oscilloscopes. It was found that in a highly inhomogeneous electric field and increased voltages at the prebreakdown stage of the discharge, regardless of the type of gas (air, nitrogen, argon, hydrogen, methane, neon, helium), spherical form streamers are formed. The data on the instantaneous speed of the streamer in the air at different voltages, as well as data on the displacement current caused by the redistribution of the electric field in the gap during the formation of the streamer. Runaway electron beams are registered. The mechanism of formation of anode- and cathode-directed streamers at high overvoltages is discussed.
