Air breakdown in the field of traveling TEМ-wave assisted by runaway electrons
The method of dynamic time-domain refectometry was used to investigate the pulsed breakout of air-filled coaxial line by traveling voltage wave with the amplitude of about minus 100 kV. Exposition of the TEM-wave radial electric field was of ~ 1 ns. The field enhancer representing exserted disk-type insert into central electrode of the line created conditions for the spatial localization of the breakdown. Obtained data were compared with the artificial short circuit mode of the line radial gap performed in the enhancer's location region. With the increase of the voltage amplitude and distortion of the field by enhancer, the criteria of electrons runaway were fulfilled. In this case, a flow of fast particles was formed which initiated the breakdown with an increased rate of the voltage collapse, increased discharge current and reduced resistance.
