The structure features and morphology of copper-cerium nanopowders obtained by pulse laser ablation

Copper-cerium nanopowders CuO x -CeO2 (mass ratio Cu: Ce = 6: 100) were prepared by mixing of dispersions of copper and cerium oxides obtained by pulsed laser ablation (PLA) in a liquid followed by drying. Initial dispersions of copper oxides were prepared by PLA using targets of metallic copper in distilled water or in a 1% hydrogen peroxide solution; cerium oxide was prepared by PLA of metallic cerium in distilled water. Nanoparticles of copper oxides of different morphology and composition / structure are formed by ablation of copper in water and hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution. Crystalline phases of copper oxides are not observed in copper-cerium nanopowders obtained from individual dispersions. Copper oxides are distributed as a thin layer on the surface of CeO2, which is confirmed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The formation of the Cu-O-Ce interface induces the formation of defects on the CeO2 surface, which is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. A study of the surface composition and charge states of elements for CuO x nanoparticles and CuO x -CeO2 nanopowders was carried out by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results of the study revealed the r combination of Cu (I) and Cu (II) species with the predominant contribution of the monovalent copper on the surface of CuO x -CeO2 nanopowders, which might be a result of the interaction between CuO x and CeO2.
