Analysis of circular depolarization ratio variation for remote sensing of an inhomogeneous medium
The problems connected with the effect of an inhomogeneous medium filled with scattering particles (for example, precipitation particles), on the polarization characteristics of electromagnetic waves propagating in the medium, radiated with circular polarization of one direction of rotation (for example, right-hand direction) are considered. An approach for assessment of the waves polarization structure transformation effect on the circular depolarization ratio magnitude is proposed. The approach is based on the representation of an inhomogeneous medium in the form of a homogeneous section and a second medium section following it, which is characterized by the properties anisotropic in polarization and the orientation angle of its polarization eigenbasis relative to the measurement basis. A feature of the proposed approach is determining the circular depolarization ratio for backscattering of a probing wave by an inhomogeneous medium with using a complex phasor wave scattered by the second (anisotropic) section.
