The radiation losses of a relativistic charge moving in a vacuum near a dielectric radiator
The radiation losses of a relativistic charge moving in a vacuum near a dielectric radiator in which Vavilov - Cherenkov radiation is generated are estimated. For a moving charge near the flat surface an of the infinite radiator (along the charge path), radiation losses were calculated based on the existing theory. In the case of a limited radiator with a length L along the trajectory of the charge (i.e. for a radiator with input and output planar faces perpendicular to the path of the charge, which lead to the emergence of «edge effects») we have developed the model for calculating the radiation characteristics based on the polarization currents method. According to this model, radiation losses have been calculated and it is shown that the losses on Vavilov - Cherenkov radiation for the finite radiator with taking into account the edge effects are higher by 2-3 orders of magnitude compared to an infinite radiator.
