Linearly polarized wave beam scanning at two-mode interaction in multiwave Cherenkov generator

In the paper, the possibility to obtain a scanning linearly polarized wave beam from a multiwave Cherenkov generator is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. It is shown theoretically that when using azimuthally nonuniform periodic slow-wave structures, it is possible to generate two transverse modes periodically replacing each other at the same carrier frequency (9 GHz). In the waveguide outputing radiation, the mode field is mainly linearly polarized. The transverse distribution of the mode field corresponds to the modes TEM00 and TEM10 of the confocal resonator. As it follows from the calculations, the angular direction of the maximum in the radiation intensity distribution at a fixed distance from such sources varies from -9° to +9° with a period of 17-20 ns. The results of experimental studies are in good agreement with theoretical data.
