Micromagnetic analysis of edge effects in a thin magnetic film with local excitation of magnetization oscillations

Using numerical micromagnetic modeling we investigated the magnetization dynamics of a thin film with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. In the film, ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) was excited on local areas by a linearly polarized microwave magnetic field emitted from a hole 1 mm in diameter in a metallic ground plane of a transmission line. It was found that nonuniform demagnetizing fields arising near the film’s edges lead not only to the shift of the FMR field but also cause the change in the magnitude and direction of the uniaxial anisotropy. The distribution of the magnetic anisotropy characteristics over the area of a permalloy film 60 nm in thickness obtained with a scanning FMR spectrometer is in good accordance with the results of micromagnetic modeling. It was established that the edge effects in magnetic films are mainly caused by the demagnetizing fields.
