Influence of TiC powder particles on structural features and mechanical properties of spark plasma sintered Ni3Al

Intermetallic Ni3Al and Ni3Al+TiC composite specimens were consolidated by spark plasma sintering of the precursors obtained by preliminary mechanical activation of 3Ni-Al powder mixture in high-energy ball mills followed by the addition of TiC powder and without it. A comparative study of the influence of TiC was carried out by methods of structural investigation and measurement of mechanical properties. After consolidation, no effect of the introduced particles on the structure parameters of the intermetallic matrix was revealed. Under synthesis conditions and subsequent high-temperature annealings, TiC does not interact with the intermetallic matrix. The presence of coarse TiC particles contributes to the additional embrittlement of the Ni3Al+TiC composite at room temperature, while at high temperatures, a significant increase in strength and ductility is observed compared to pure Ni3Al. It was shown that an increase in the testing temperature leads to a change in the fracture mechanisms of the intermetallic matrix and coarse TiC particles.
