Effect of loading rate on kinetics of plastic deformation localization bands in nickel

The features of macroscopic localization of plastic deformation in samples of industrial nickel NP2 (99.5 wt.% Purity) are considered. Uniaxial tension of flat specimens was carried out at room temperature with loading rates of 0.05; 0.2 and 0.8 mm/min. The tensile diagrams show jerky flow from yield point to neck formation. By the method of correlation of digital speckle images, the features of the movement of bands of localized plastic deformation under the conditions of the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect are revealed. The effect of the loading rate on the propagation rate of the bands of localized deformation in the process of tension is investigated. An inversely proportional dependence of the rate of propagation of bands of localized deformation on the total deformation has been established.
