Laser photoionization spectroscopy of Rydberg and autoionization states of rare-earth element atoms

Systematic studies of the Rydberg and auto ionization states of rare-earth element atoms have been carried out. The exact values of the ionization potentials of lanthanides are determined and the dependence of the values of the ionization potentials of atoms on the atomic number (Z) and the number of lost valence electrons (N) is investigated. It is shown that both dependences consist of two straight lines: for small values of Z and N, the dependence on Ei is close to quadratic, and for large values, i.e. Z>65 and N>8, the dependence is close to cubic. The physical mechanisms of formation of peak and smooth asymmetric auto ionization resonances in near-threshold and long-range auto ionization spectra of rare-earth element atoms are established. The spectra of each element consisting of two groups of spectra are shown: The first one has a peak structure and is located in the long-wave side of the auto ionization spectra. These spectra are formed by the ionization of atoms from excited states. The second group of spectra, which has a smooth appearance and is close to the Gaussian shape, but is asymmetric - is due to the ionization of atoms from the ground state.
