Generation of multi-charged ions in plasma of submicrosecond high-current vacuum arc discharge
Multiply charged metal ion beams are used both in fundamental research in the field of nuclear and atomic physics and in solving applied problems, such as ion modification of surfaces. An effective and easy-to-implement method for producing ions of high charge states is the use of a high-current vacuum arc discharge with a pulse duration of several microseconds or less. The paper presents experimental results on the generation of multiply charged ions of conducting materials in vacuum arc plasma with a current amplitude of about 3.5 kA and a pulse duration of 0.9 μs. A wide range of different cathode materials has been studied: lead, gadolinium, lanthanum, tin, silver, molybdenum, niobium, zirconium, copper, titanium, magnesium, and carbon with different physical properties. The charge composition of ions in arc plasma for various materials and the factors influencing the generation of multiply charged ions are discussed.
