Migration of vapors from buried ordnance
The problem of humanitarian demining is relevant due to unexploded ordnance that cannot be detected by standard methods. One of the methods is to search for trace amounts of substances in the air and soil using chemical sensors. A mathematical model of explosive vapor diffusion through soil is proposed. The effect of humidity on the diffusion rate is studied and a characteristic vapor detection time is introduced. RDX, PETN, and TNT vapor concentrations are estimated depending on the depth and time of occurrence. It is found that the vapor concentration increases nonlinearly.
