Observation of the glow structure of positive streamers in carbon dioxide
Various glow zones of a streamer head formed under conditions of an apokampic discharge in carbon dioxide at pressures of 3 to 12 Torr and propagating at a velocity of ~ 2∙107 cm∙s-1 were detected. Time-resolved optical diagnostics revealed that the streamer head consists of the main brightly glowing zone and a preceding weakly glowing zone, which we previously called a precursor. The time lag between the zones is several nanoseconds. It is assumed that the precursor glow corresponds to the region of uncompensated positive ion charge and is located in the vicinity of the streamer front, where the electric field strength reaches its maximum value. The main brightly glowing zone corresponds to the streamer body. The facts found should be used to make additions to the cathode-directed streamer model.
