Leviathan: the discursive dependence on oil. From resource to metonymy and back

The article presents research done in the field of social anthropology on the issue of oil dependence and conflicts associated with it and involve many different actors. The anthropological approach used differs in that it places an emphasis on the context of formation and reproduction as well as of authorship of the discourse around the 'vitally important resource' in which indigenous communities are involved in a special capacity, fill out a strictly defined role, and wherein they have no say. Anthropologists expand the sphere of their analysis through importing sociological, economic and philosophical concepts of biopolitics, discursive dependence and metonymy, resource curse, etc. The article studies general provisions of these approaches laid out in some recent anthropological monographs.
