“I Don’t Want to Know About It”: Mechanisms of Memory and Oblivion Among the Communists in France

Many former French communists, who had been resigned voluntarily or forcibly from the Communist Party, engaged in the literary practice of self-criticism in their memoirs and autobiographies. In this article, based on their autobiographical writings, the role of the theme of memory and oblivion in the description of their political biography is studied. One of the main mechanisms of the collective and individual memory of the French communists was “repression”. When it ceased to fulfill its therapeutic function, the ex-communists used self-criticism in their memoirs as a means of restoring memory to realize or justify their past. Thus, self-criticism, an accusatory institutional practice among communists, was transformed into a liberating literary practice for former communists who brought back the repressed memories by writing them down. The author declares no conflicts of interests.
