The Heritage Canons and the Practices of Protecting the Past in the USSR. Introduction to the Special Theme of the Issue
The article provides an overview of critical heritage studies, outlining key developments in the field and exploring the specific issues related to the study of Russian heritage policies and preservation practices. The author stresses the contingent and negotiable nature of what is considered valuable in the past, situating heritage process within larger political, economic, and social contexts. Key historiographical tensions regarding Soviet heritage canons are outlined, alongside an argument for the importance of examining regional differences in Soviet heritage protection policies. The article demonstrates that Soviet heritage canons were dynamic, shaped through negotiation among state bodies, academic experts, and civil activists. Particular attention is paid to conflicts between the center and periphery, conservatives and modernizers, as well as the role of civic initiatives in reconciling differing views of the past. Ultimately, the article highlights the complexity and multidimensionality of heritage production and reassessment, underscoring the need to broaden geographic and methodological approaches in the study of Soviet and post-Soviet cultural heritage.
