The creative reception of "Egyptian Nights" by Alexander Pushkin in the novel Ararat by D.M. Thomas
The article analyzes the methods and semantics appending unfinished Pushkin's texts included in the "Egyptian Nights" in the novel by modern English prose writer and translator D.M. Thomas Ararat: а) the poetic story about Cleopatra, в) the prose story about Charsky and the improviser. The hermeneutic, not fiction character of continuation of classical texts is justified: way to understand different cultural traditions in relation to death, creativity, social ethics. The way of Thomas's mythologizing of the Russian tradition of social behavior and creativity is revealed. Thomas develops Pushkin's comparison of different cultural traditions connected with Еп^ and death in the poetic fragments of the images of Cleopatra and her three lovers: Hellenistic, Roman and Asian traditions. He also compares the aristocratic, artistic, military and pragmatic ethics. Thomas expresses his mythological perception of the Russian creator appending the story of Charsky and the improviser. The Russian poet is endowed with a keen sense of honor, compassion, unselfishness and social act.
