The special aspects of art and technological editing of high school educational book

The role of graphic design as a professional activity in everyday Russian reality is increasing every year. There is a growing demand for specialists in one of its most promising areas, namely, book design. Graphic design is particularly important for high school educational book. A specific feature of its release is a different approach of publishers to the artistic and technical editing (projecting) and designing of publications, their printing. According to the author, a different approach of publishers is primarily due to the different conceptual approaches to writing a textbook and the collective nature of publishing activities for the production of textbooks. It is proved that an integral part of the concept of the textbook should be the parameters of artistic and technical design embodied in the publication design project. Expedient and most cost-effective solutions are associated with the choice of the size of the publication, design of the cover or binding, typeface, font size; illustration system and the construction of a modular grid. In addition the idea of interconnection of effective solutions of the artistic and technical design of the textbook with the conceptual approach to writing the content of the textbook is emphasized. The author proposes the following method of artistic and technical design of educational books: 1) the analysis of the author's text providing the purpose of the book depending on the nature of the presentation and scope of information material in academic disciplines; 2) the concept of decoration - the general and fundamental vision of the future textbook, manuals, etc., taking into account the qualification and the discipline; 3) the project of typography which must include the following parameters of the textbook: format and modular grid; system of headings; solutions for special pages (fore-title, title, sectional title); typography features (choice of typeface for all kinds of text, font, means and methods of changing the structure of the font composition); system of highlighting within the text and the composition and nature of exterior design of the textbook (serial or separate publication). In addition, the project of textbook design should describe the illustration system including the categories and types of illustrations by the technique; students' qualification; areas of study and disciplines. The editor with the author and the artistic technical editor (designer) can complement the paper edition of the textbook with electronic components. The author believes that artistic and technical editing of the textbook may include development of models of educational publications including page layouts. It is concluded that the theory and practice of textbook production are not connected spontaneously. If this practice does not change, there is no reason to expect that the quality of the artistic and technical design of textbooks will increase. A productive interaction within the professional community is to join efforts and different tools to achieve a common goal.
