A.P. Elagina, the author of an article about the bookseller Ivan Vasilievich Popov
The author of the article first publishes the autograph of an article by A.P. Elagina, an outstanding representative of Russian enlightened intellectuals of the first half of the 19th century. The article is a brief description of the biography of the famous Moscow publisher and bookseller I.V. Popov. The manuscript of Kratkaya biografiya byvshegoMoskovskogo Knigoprodavtsa Soderzhatelya Universitetskoy Tipografii Kuptsa Ivana Vasil'evicha Pop-ova [A brief biography of the former Moscow bookseller, Owner of the Univerity Typog-rapy, Merchant Ivan Popov] stored in the Russian National Library in the fund of V.A. Zhukovsky is a draft autograph (two double-sided sheets), and dates back to 1839, the year of Popov's death. A.P. Elagina was in contact with many famous people of his time. Among them was Ivan Popov, from a merchant family, who, owing to his personal enthusiasm, passion for education and exceptional energy, became a landmark figure in the history of Russian book-printing and bookselling. For instance, it was I. Popov who promoted Karamzin's heading the Vestnik Evropy [Herald of Europe] journal. Elagina's article is introduced in the context of her correspondence with V.A. Zhukovsky in connection with the financial relations with Popov connected with the liberation of serfs, and also in the context of Ksenofont Polevoy's memories of Popov who described the latter as an extremely versatile man: a merchant, a university student, a bookseller, a printer, a writer, a friend of many writers and scholars. Elagina's article about Popov contains the scholarly commentaries of the publisher.
