The image of new father in American film discourse

The article is devoted to the analysis of the image of the "new" father in American film discourse on the example of Chris Gardner from the film "The Pursuit of Happiness". The "new" father type is part of the "new" model of fatherhood, which is based on a certain kind of father roles and corresponds to the modified "traditional" masculinity that is based on the following characteristics that are considered to be feminine: direct presence of the "new father" during the birth of their children, their upbringing and further life as well as egalitarianism in everyday matters. Particular attention is paid to the ability of a film image to have a stronger emotional impact on a recipient. It is also emphasized that the same components are used to create the image of a film character and of a literary figure. An attempt is made to build a model of the "new" father image in film discourse. The analysis of the verbal component includes the analysis of the semantics of film phrases or lines, which directly or indirectly interpret the image of the "father character". In the analysis of non-verbal signs, the manner of speech, the appearance, the behavior of the character as a father primarily in the situations of communication and interaction with other characters were taken into account. The extralinguistic context of the film plays a significant role in the creation of the image, and the corresponding background knowledge of the film contributes to a correct deciphering of the author's message. In the analysis of the character's image, attention was paid to the written script as well as to the visual peculiarities of the film. The material allows to study the "new" father image and to find out how the "new" father influences the upbringing of his own children.
