Genre Hybridization as a Literary Communication Strategy in Linor Goralik's Book Says:
The article discusses the problem of the interaction of the short story with the colloquial narrative, and genre hybridization arising on this basis. The material is a book by Linor Goralik Says:. It embodies processes relevant in modern literature, in particular, the transposition of “non-artistic material” (V. Shklovsky) in the sphere of art. This process generates a variety of genreoids, which are actually hybrid formations. The article analyzes the specifics of an occasional genreoid created by Goralik, designated Homonvmously to the title of the book: “Says”. Externally, the newly created genreoid represents excerpts from the allegedly overheard conversations, which are easily identified by modern readers. Although, using multi-level language tools, Goralik actualizes typical features of live speech (phonetic features of pronunciation, high frequency of non-notional parts of speech, specific word order, syntactic compression, constructions with pleonastic pronouns, various kinds of repetitions, etc.), readers still understand what they see is not actual speech, but its stylization, a kind of speech game. Unlike everyday conversations, Goralik's genreoids do not only transmit information, but also make an aesthetic impact on the reader. If the presented excerpts of conversations were devoid of artistry, they would have a zero aesthetic value. The genreoid “Says” can be considered as a form of modern “naive art”, actively functioning both in literature and in other cultural semiotics (painting, for example). The main secret of Goralik's book is the mechanism of “translating” everyday conversation into a literary text via meaning generation and artistic signification. Goralik's short story is characterized by the effect of readers' recognition of “their own selves”. Therefore, the selection of colloqial dialogues does not look random: their topics have a deep connection with the basic values of society (family, children, charity, etc.). The writer presents existence as an endless stream of interpersonal communication, but at the same time focuses the readers' attention on what they often do not notice in everyday life. Therefore, the reader in this “outworldly” position in relation to the depicted world is able to look at the speech situation from outside, that is, to objectify it, to join the author's outlook and feel the value of the ordinary. Says: makes you think about the value of diversity in everyday life.
