Books for family reading in modern publishing practice in Belarus

The article describes the topic of family reading. Its social, pedagogical and psychological significance is undeniable; there are a number of studies that prove this. However, from a publishing point of view, the phenomenon of family reading has been practically unstudied. The author of the article takes a look into the research of modern scientists and formulates requirements for publications used for these purposes. If a book is recommended for family reading, it means it meets certain requirements for content and design. Firstly, the work must be interesting, understandable and accessible to children of a certain age who will participate in reading. Secondly, the form of the work must be optimal for the child: a relevant genre, a convenient structural division of the text so that one can stop to discuss what he has read; accessible and moderately emotional language so that the text is well perceived by ear. Thirdly, for effective family reading, the publication may include such reference elements as a preface, an introductory article, or some additional text: for example, tips and recommendations for parents. Fourthly, the publication must be well designed and visually attract the child. Thus it is recommended to use a work with dual addressing as a text for implementing the family reading model, which raises issues that are relevant for readers of different ages and involves joint reflection on what has been read. The structure, paratextual formations, artistic and technical design and printing (enlarged format) of the publication are designed to help organize the process of shared reading. The publisher can "label" his product with an indication of family reading in the wording of the title complex, in the abstract, in the imprint. However, in modern practice, such information is rarely indicated by Belarusian publishing houses. The object of the editorial assessment of the author of the article was 10 books that were published in the Republic of Belarus in the period from 2017 to 2024 and are designated by publishers as "books for family reading." In terms of intended purpose, most of them are literary and artistic publications; according to the composition of the main text - collections; Books in Russian predominate. The analysis allows the author to assert that all publications meet the necessary requirements. Information that a book is recommended for family reading can help interested parents to choose from a large array of publications. Thus the author of the article draws attention to the successful publishing practice of preparing books for family reading and identifies the necessary theoretical basis for its dissemination. The author declares no conflicts of interests.
