Place of textbooks in the stock of book production by Tomsk publishing houses in late 19th century (by example of the collection of G.K. Tyumentsev)
History of book culture in Tomsk is part of an all-Russian history of the book in the cultural space of the country. Attracting attention of researchers, it has both points of convergence with the national processes and regional, namely, Tomsk, distinctive features. In order to analyse the distinctions, the author sought to expand the understanding of the production of Tomsk publishers of the turn of the 19th-20th centuries in the field of educational books. The problem is more specific: the issue of textbook publishing is connected with the problem of the local Tomsk reader, which was why the private book collection of G.K. Tyumentsev was used for the material of the study. The researchers call this collection the most complete collection of pre-revolutionary books in Tomsk with more than 1,000 Tomsk editions. The analysis of both the Tomsk textbook and the Tomsk reader seems very fruitful in the study of literary culture in Tomsk. The author follows many researchers of the literary culture of Siberia and by the concept of the Tomsk book she means all kinds of the printed works of that period: books, pamphlets, reprints of articles, etc. as an important material showing the so-called publishing syncretism that allows a fuller demonstration of the specificity of the process of the formation and development of the Tomsk book culture. However, one should consider the originality of typological characteristics of specific types of Tomsk publications, in particular, scientific and educational literature, which had its own purposes and readers. All this dictated the choice of books to publish, frequency, design and printing parameters of publications. The article examines the place of textbooks in the book stock of the Provincial and private printing houses in Tomsk: V.V. Mikhailov and P.I. Makushin's, V.P. Kartamyshev's (later the association "G.V. Preysman and N.Ya. Belyaev"), M.N. Kononov and I.F. Skulimovsky's, etc. The conclusion is that the collection of G.K. Tyumentsev most fully represents the initial stage of the Tomsk publishing of the 1860s-1880s, which had the broadest regional publishing book stock, scientific and popular scientific literature being a large part of it. This tendency was stimulated by the expanding needs of the reader of the university town. During this period, this literature performed the function of textbooks, for the latter was not a separate type of publication in Tomsk. At the beginning of the 20th century this gap was filled. Tomsk published all the main types of university textbooks for various disciplines.
