The history of electronic publishing in the Far Eastern Federal University

The choice of this topic is due to the modern trend of foreign and domestic publishing industry to use electronic format. The proof of this tendency is the sales of the books by the largest online retailer in the world Amazon.com in the second quarter of 2010. Clarifying the terminology from the field of electronic publishing, the author draws attention to the fact that the term "electronic edition" is not fixed in the System of standards on information, librarianship and publishing, but is broadly used in academic and professional literature. The author analyses the definition of the electronic book and the electronic copy in GOST (federal standard) 7.83-2001. Next, the history of electronic publishing in FEFU (by example of textbooks) from the late 1990s is given. It is the history of electronic publishing development in the united universities, namely, in the Pacific State University of Economics, Far Eastern State Technical University and Far Eastern State University. The analysis showed that in FESTU and FESU issuing electronic editions was the responsibility of IT- specialists, not the publishing departments of the universities. As a result, as I.A. Morev says, the Open University of FESU outsourced scientific editing, proof-reading of electronic publications to the editors of the Far Eastern State University Publishing House. The natural consequence of this was the trend towards electronic book publishing in a united publishing structure - the Publishing House of the Far Eastern Federal University (which is the result of a merger of the Publishing and Printing Complex of FESU, FENTU Publishing House, an offset printing sector of PSUE, and FENTU Printing House).
