"The wizard of poetry": Nikolai Sumtsov in the Yuzhnyy Kray newspaper
The history of publications of Nikolai Fedorovich Sumtsov, a folklorist, ethnographer, literary historian, is a vivid example of the interaction of scientific and newspaper discourses. In addition to works on folklore and ethnography, he wrote a significant number of articles about the work of Russian, Ukrainian and European writers and artists. Many of these texts first appeared on the pages of the Yuzhnyy Kray newspaper. The First World War changed not only the newspaper's columns (news and reports on government actions came to the fore), but also the general tone of publications. Sumtsov produces texts at the intersection of history and sociology, political science and literary criticism. An attempt is being made to find the answer to the question of how the fate of the philologist unfolded 100 years ago, in the era of revolutions, civil and world wars. Based on publications in Yuzhnyy Kray, information about the creative path of Professor Sumtsov from 1900 to 1917 is summarized. The author declares no conflicts of interests.
